The Best Internal Wall Insulation for Old Properties?
Переглядів 246 тис.2 місяці тому
How I insulated my old property with a breathable internal wall insulation. So after years of trying out different internal wall insulation systems at my old victorian cottage (which has no cavity walls) I recently decided it was time to find a more appropriate, breathable system. After exhaustive research I came up with what I think is the perfect retrofit internal wall insulation system. In t...

Kitchen is looking fantastic!😊
The idea of using screws with rubber sleeving is a good idea. I've replaced a mirror and it was held in place with clips on the top and bottom instead of silicon to hold it to the wall. What do you think of using some clips at the top to keep the glass from falling out? If you got or painted the clips so that they were the same colour as the glass then the clips would be difficult to see.
Having just viewed a cottage that was constructed in 1803, this video was a perfect example of what I'd be looking at doing. My plans, if we do buy, would be insulate, ventilate, make it breathable and I'm improve airtightness. Bash in solar and ASHP and it'd be lovely.
I fitted a large mirror in my bathroom, but I didn't realise that because the mirror is fitted to an external wall, when the mirror steams up it shows where the silicon is. In hindsight I would have fixed some insulated plasterboard first.
Please please please DON'T put any sealants between cookers and worktops or splashbacks. It's a FREESTANDING appliance and as a whitegoods eng I see them glued all the time. For cleaning and maintenance please leave it freestanding
A splashback made from and matching your worktop would have looked miles better and blended in with your upstands
I have a white glass backsplash (no green tinge at all) and it has sparkles in it to match the white quartz worktops.
can you do a video on how to install an electric gate?
Arr, bless your cotton socks for pretending you might want to change the splashback in the future when we all know you'll do what the boss wants when she wants. 😂
Looks great
Dob and dab silicone is deffenly the way to go. Line siliconing might not make contact if the wall is uneven. Another important choice, as you pointed out, is using low modular silicone. The regular cheaper stuff can and will destroy electrical components, i.e., extraction fan or some oven components from the silicone vapour
"Line siliconing might not make contact if the wall is uneven." It all depends on how thick the lines are. :)
Not concerned about anything going down the gap between the oven and the splashback?
If you watch the video you will know the answer.
Great
This is a great video but I’m slightly confused at the beginning of the video, if you have a single brick or maybe double brick home, is it better/ easier to insulate from the outside? 😊
Can you sent me to the right video to change the lower door seal, please and thank you. I love your educative video
Brilliant nice video to watch and has given me the answer its 2am and ive got my answer how to hang my towel radiator on a plaster board wall.
This is a brilliant tip! I am going to get those screws for sure!

Osmo Review: I decided to go for the Osmo oil to achieve higher quality and quicker drying time. Osmo supposedly offers better coverage, up to 24 sq/m per liter, which is significantly more than the rest, which would work also price-wise. However, as per the small print, if the wood is quite thirsty, you will not get that coverage. I bought the 2.5 liters thinking it would be enough for my 23 sqm 3 year old dec k, for two coats. Unfortunately, it was not enough to treat it even once. The result is good, yet now I have to buy another 2.5lt for a second coat, which significantly ups the budget. Another parameter to consider is that while most other oils can be easily found in your nearby hardware store, Osmo is not so easy to find in physical stores, which means you will need to order it. This didn’t work for me since I wanted to apply the first coat in the morning and the second in the evening (to get it done before it started raining, so I wouldn’t have to clear and move the furniture again). So when the first coat consumed the whole tin, I couldnt just go to the store and buy another one on the day - I had to order for next day. So, you might want to order more and then return any unused product. I have yet to apply the second coat, but so far, it looks nice. I don’t have the knowledge to compare it to other products. The Osmo cleaning brush is worth the money - great tool to clean the deck! The oil application brush, makes application really easy. Thank you very much for the video!
Thanks
An absolutely useless system. Installed throughout the entire house 2 years ago, 6 radiators, extra thermostat controler, and signal extenders. This system is very inaccurate in result you have to cold or to hot house, resulting in a waste of money on extra heating costs in addition to the system itself. It's worth mentioning that it was installed by a certified plumber. The batteries run out very quickly; you'll need to replace them 3-4 times a year. The app is glitchy all the time. I deeply regret purchasing it; it's a waste of money and time. Now I have a completely useless system that I HAVE TO REMOVE and RETURN BACK TO THE OLD FASHIONED THERMOSTAT. I'VE LOST THOUSANDS OF POUNDS.

Charlie. Have you made a list of parts for your dust collection bag setup. Thanks
No film forming paints, mind! No wallpaper. Fine for me but for everyone?
Really helpful. My job is much simpler -replacing a broken kitchen cupboard hinge, but this video helped me understand how it all works
Thanks David. Glad you found it useful.
Something else I have learnt. Diy'er. Thanks.
Glad you found it useful.. Thanks for the comment. 👊
I have found this a confusing topic and am considering using Breathaplasta Thermal Insulating Plaster. Have you heard of this? Claims to improve u value by 60% and breathable. Any thoughts?
No I haven't got any experience with that unfortunately.
Really good video. Thank you very much. Subscribed.
Thanks Ben. Chuffed you found it useful and thanks so much for the sub 👌👊
Stuff i already known but good video as always.
Thanks 👍
Who is Z man..does he have a channel as well mate
Not sure if he has a channel. It was just a comment at the time.
How have these held up Charlie? This is my first attempt at making mock shaker style doors full length about 240cm for a tall wardrobe. Don't have a router to make the traditional way. Have seen other videos of people doing similar with 12mm board and 6mm rails and stiles and people have said they've started warping after a short wile due to only one side holding the weight of rails and stiles, and also due to the pva (perbaps water in it) and not using MR MDF. I am planning to use 18mm regular mdf with 6mm rails and stiles.
They've held up very well. This is the better video to watch ua-cam.com/video/tdMnnkvInrE/v-deo.htmlsi=5rFQN7v7c0HOv3OV The warping happens when you make it, not afterwards as discussed in the video - and I know this as I've had the frustrating experience of doors warping. These doors and the ones in the video you've watched haven't moved one bit.
Great advice thanks very much...
Hi Charlie Are the led strips mains or low voltage Off transformer?? Great video as always full of tips information for us diy ers
Thanks. They're low voltage off transformers.
Aha ! we have roller blinds in the recess of our double glazed windows. That answers that issue of heavy condesation :)
Yes indeed!
Never thought about recycling the spirits..clever that..class video.😊
Thanks 👊
Your kitchen floor before the George was disgusting, like lazy pigs lived there, but the George did a superb job...
Yep. George still going strong
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I love how you explain it all so simply.
You're very welcome. Thanks for the comment 👊
Hi I love your video. We live in a council flat and have hot pipes on the external wall leading to radiators we are getting mould behind the pipes on the wall ovbs heat hitting a cold wall but what can we do to stop it ?
You need to reduce moisture as outlined in the video. Other option would be to insulate the wall behind the pipes but I'm guessing that's not practical.
Great videos charlie thank you so much they are amazing
Thanks Paul, really appreciate that. 👊
Excellent video Charlie
Thanks Samuel 👊
Hi Charlie - another great video, thank you. Question, how did you mount the kitchen wall cabinets with such a big gap between the inside wall and solid brick walls? I want to do something similar but all i can think is to add some noggins in the stud wall where the cabinets will go. I don't really want to add wooden sheets across the whole surface. Thanks.
We were lucky in that the kitchen fitter was able to screw into 2 studs behind the cabinets. If you can plan this then yes noggins would be perfect.
@@CharlieDIYte Thank you for the advice, I really appreciate that. Love your channel BTW.
Thank you for that. I'll go and gather up my tools and get the job done
I need to do mine again 😉
Absolutely the best
Thanks. Make sure you watch this one if you've got corners to do ua-cam.com/video/EErbuodMOAM/v-deo.html 👊
Can I paint over the mould paint with regular emulsion so my entire room is the same colour?
Yes you can. I guess it'll just negate the effect of the biocide in the paint but provided you've treated the original mould and have taken steps to stop it coming back ua-cam.com/video/NbtijHKy2Vo/v-deo.htmlsi=1x4TpDePcC9J7AsM
Is mdf better to use than ply
Ply is probably better but MDF is easier to work with. At the end of the day it comes down to cost.
Thank you so much for this, im looking to fill in the gap between the pipes for my flooring
You're welcome.👍
Great video with common sense advice. I only have a splitting Maul, which I’ve owned for many years. I find no need for anything else. For seriously knotted wood, I get the chainsaw out. I’m 60 years old and find log splitting, a great workout.
Thanks Charles. Yes I often reach for the chainsaw in those situations too 😉
Great video, job done. Thank you 😊
Glad you found it useful. Thanks for letting me know.
So glad my husband sent me this, not because I have a clue about any of the tech stuff, but because we have just instructed a contractor to build an extension. We’re having a Tom Howley kitchen, usual open planning living and I’m desperate to get the lighting right as we can’t do this twice ££££🙄 Where do I go for a lighting designer please or does Pho(??) offer that to people who buy their products? Thanks so much!
Thanks Ruth. Yes if you contact Guy Dyke-Pryce at Phos he'll produce a lighting design for you if you order the lights from him. I would definitely go with Phos if you're investing in a Thomas Howley kitchen.
Now that was very informative. Condensation in our house has been awful this year compared to others. My heating has been on low..about 18degrees due to costs. I did not know that warmer air will hold the humidity and in turn reduce condensation. This has given me lots to think about. Thankyou so much :)
There's this update ua-cam.com/video/NbtijHKy2Vo/v-deo.htmlsi=1x4TpDePcC9J7AsM and if seriously consider installing a PIV in the corridor ceiling upstairs. It'll cure the issue overnight but you should investigate the steps I talk about in this vid too.
